Srikar Vaasan is currently a freshman at Indiana University Bloomington, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in International Law & Institutions and a minor in Spanish. Srikar’s interests include history, law, and music, though he is always eager to learn and discuss more about the world.
Srikar started learning piano from Mrs. Joy Cofield, when he was just three years old. He learnt the Suzuki style of piano until Mrs. Cofield retired in 2017. Mrs. Cofield patiently taught Srikar and laid the foundation for all his future pursuits in the field of music. He later continued learning piano from Mrs. Jessica Dorman until he completed High School in 2024. While being a student of Mrs. Dorman, Srikar continued refining technique and repertoire. He has also played the piano for jazz bands in school and at many private events.
Srikar has also learnt Western classical violin under the tutelage of Mrs. Helen Bohannon. He served as the concertmaster of the Floyd Central Symphony Orchestra from 2022-2024 under the direction of Mr. Doug Elmore. Srikar, in his role as concertmaster, led the orchestra to win the 2023 Indiana State (ISSMA) Championships. Srikar has also been a leader and member of several ensembles, many of which have received gold ratings at the annual ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble Contest.
Srikar commenced his journey into Carnatic (South Indian classical music) vocal at the age of six under the tutelage of guru Vid. Rajalakshmi Gopal Iyengar and is now continuing to learn under Vid. Pusthakam Ramaa. Aside from Carnatic vocal, Srikar is an avid player of various instruments. He is learning Carnatic flute from Vid. Jayaram Kikkeri.
Srikar has composed piano music and has participated at the International piano Composition Contest for several years and was a finalist in 2017. He also got an Honorable Mention in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
Srikar’s talent and years of hard work across such instruments have won him a number of awards and competitions.
With knowledge of both Carnatic and Western styles of music, Srikar has had the opportunity to present his talent on various platforms. He remains interested in integrating interesting ideas and musical concepts, often through his own compositions. In the future, Srikar hopes to continue his exploration and musical journey, wherever it may take him.
